The blackjack rules for american blackjack or 21, are fairly simple. You are playing against the dealer. The object of the game is to come as close as possible to 21, without going over, and still beat the dealer. A good strategy to remember is... you don't have to have 21 to win - just beat the dealer!
All numbered cards are at face value. Jacks, Queens and Kings count as 10 and the Aces are valued at either 1 or 11 - whichever produces the best hand. The dealer will deal each player and himself two cards, one at a time, face up. He will keep his last card face down so it's value is concealed to everyone in the game but himself.
If you think you need a higher total to beat the dealer, you may ask for another card. To take an additional card is called taking a ‘hit’. You indicate that you would like to take a hit by scratching, or pulling the edge of the card toward you. This sign will cause the dealer to give you another card. If any hit card causes your hand to total more than 21, you have busted and the dealer will take your bet. If you think your total is enough to beat the dealer, just tuck a corner of your cards under the money that you have bet. This sign indicates that you are good and you stand.
The dealer is required to draw a card if his total is less than 17 or if he has a soft 17. A soft 17 means that the dealer's hand totals seven (an Ace and a 6, for example). Remember, the Aces count as either 1 or 11. If the dealer's hand, when completed, totals the same as yours, it's a stand-off or push, which is just another word for a tie. You do not win or lose. If your total is more than the dealer's, you win. But remember two important things: 1) If you go over 21, you have busted and you lose even if the dealer goes over 21, and 2) if you have any questions, just ask any of our friendly dealers! Any 10, Jack, Queen or King when combined with an Ace is called a Blackjack. When you are dealt a Blackjack, turn your cards over at once and you'll be paid 1 1/2 times your bet, unless the dealer also has a Blackjack, which results in a push.
When the dealer's up-card is an Ace, you may opt for insurance, betting that the dealer has a 10 or a face card which will result in a Blackjack. You may bet up to half of your original wager; an insurance bet pays 2 to 1.
A player may split any pair up to four hands, including any card that has a value of 10. Aces can be split just once and the hit card will be dealt face-down behind your money. Players may not double down after splitting; any split requires an equal wager and exact amount on each split.
